Markus, Nina, & Ebbe’s Hunting Adventure: “A Challenging Journey for a Hunter in Lapland”
Over the past nine days, Markus, his wife Nina, and their Weimaraner, Ebbe, experienced some incredible moments during their hunting trip in the forests of Lapland. While Ebbe, who is developing into an exceptional forest hunting dog, showcased his impressive skills with some outstanding pointing work, Nina was there to capture the adventure through her beautiful photography, making the experience even more memorable.
Friday: Markus had a great opportunity to shoot a large black capercaillie after Ebbe tracked it for over 100 meters, but unfortunately, he missed. Despite that, the day remained full of excitement. “After the capercaillie encounter, we checked to make sure I hadn’t hit it. During the search, Ebbe switched gears and started pointing again, which led us to a white grouse. Earlier in the day, he had also pointed out a hazel grouse, and I successfully shot it,” Markus shared.
Sunday: On a short one-hour trip, Ebbe pointed out birds three times, holding still 100 meters away. Markus missed another shot at a female capercaillie due to tricky conditions, but overall, Ebbe’s performance was superb—especially after covering over 80 kilometers in just two days.
Monday: Ebbe continued to shine, covering an impressive 48 kilometers. They encountered another black grouse and successfully shot a female capercaillie. Markus felt immense gratitude for Ebbe’s tireless efforts.
Thursday: Ebbe delivered some of his best work yet, covering 35 kilometers and locating two capercaillies from over 100 meters away. Although Markus missed his shots again due to the challenging terrain, it was evident that Ebbe was growing into an even more capable hunting dog, having covered roughly 280 kilometers over the past two weeks.
Friday: On the final day of their trip, Markus finally succeeded in shooting a male capercaillie. While he wished they had caught more, he was incredibly proud of Ebbe, who is proving to be one of the finest Weimaraners in forest hunting in Finland, where most hunters typically rely on German Pointers.
